Troubleshooting

Common issues.

Most issues are macOS permission related and resolve after the first setup. If yours is not listed here, check the FAQ or email us directly.

macOS blocks the app on first open

Right-click Flutely.app in Applications, choose Open, then click Open again. This is standard for apps distributed outside the Mac App Store.

"Quit & Reopen" dialog appears after granting permissions

This can be normal on some macOS permission transitions. If prompted, click "Quit & Reopen" once. Flutely should reopen and continue setup.

Input Monitoring is not granted

Input Monitoring is optional unless you use push-to-talk. Dictation can still work with Microphone + Accessibility. If you want push-to-talk key detection, grant Input Monitoring in System Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Input Monitoring.

Flutely Cloud is unavailable or limited

If Flutely Cloud errors, times out, or reaches limits, Flutely can fall back to Local Whisper if installed. This keeps dictation available without reinstalling.

"Flutely wants to control System Events" prompt

Click OK. macOS requires this permission for Flutely to insert text into your apps. It is a one-time prompt on first use.

Duplicate entries in Input Monitoring

If you upgraded from an older version, you may see two Flutely entries in System Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Input Monitoring. Remove both, then reopen Flutely - it will re-register as a single entry.

Text goes to clipboard instead of inserting directly

Some apps do not support direct text insertion - Spotlight, certain Electron apps, and secure input fields. Flutely automatically falls back to clipboard. Paste with Cmd+V.

API key not working (OpenAI or Groq)

Make sure you are pasting the right key for the right provider. A Groq key (starts with gsk_) will not work in the OpenAI field. Flutely will warn you if it detects a mismatch. Also check for invisible characters - re-copy the key from your provider dashboard.

I reached a cloud usage limit

Cloud limits are enforced per install for reliability. If you hit a limit, you can continue with Local Whisper mode or use your own API key path.

Dictation is slow or times out

If using a cloud provider, check your internet connection. For consistent speed without network dependency, switch to Privacy Mode - it uses local Whisper and works offline.

App doesn't appear in the menu bar

Check that Flutely is in your Applications folder (not running from the DMG). If it still does not appear, try quitting and reopening from Applications.
